Weekend Risk Score

The Weekend Risk Score (0–100) quantifies structural risk from stale oracle prices when traditional markets are closed.

The core problem

The 65-hour gap

Stock Tokens trade 24/7 on Robinhood Chain, but NYSE closes at 4pm ET Friday and reopens at 9:30am ET Monday. During this window, Chainlink oracle prices are frozen at Friday's close.

What happens during weekends

  1. Friday 4pm ET — NYSE closes, oracle price freezes
  2. Weekend — DeFi markets continue trading with stale prices
  3. Monday 9:30am ET — NYSE opens, oracle updates instantly
  4. Gap risk — If the stock dropped, liquidations happen at once

Real example

Imagine NVDA closes at $150 on Friday. Over the weekend, bad news breaks. On Monday, NVDA opens at $130 (–13%). Borrowers who were safe at Friday's price are now instantly liquidated at Monday's open.

Risk tiers

The score maps to three risk levels:

Example

0-33

Low Risk

Market is open, or collateral is a low-volatility ETF (SPY, QQQ)

34-66

Moderate Risk

Weeknight closure, or weekend with standard equity (AAPL, MSFT)

67-100

High Risk

Weekend or holiday with volatile stock (GME, IONQ, ASTS)

Factors that increase risk

1. High liquidation threshold (LLTV)

Markets with 77% LLTV have thinner safety buffers than those with 50% LLTV. Less room for price drops before liquidation.

2. Volatile collateral

Single stocks are riskier than diversified ETFs:

  • High volatility — IONQ, GME, ASTS, LUNR
  • Standard volatility — AAPL, NVDA, MSFT, TSLA
  • Low volatility — SPY, QQQ, SOXX
  • Very low volatility — SGOV (treasury ETF)

3. Time until market opens

Risk increases as time passes:

Example

17h

Overnight gap

4pm → 9:30am

65h

Weekend gap

Fri → Mon

89h

3-day weekend

Holiday closure

4. Oracle staleness

How long since the Chainlink feed last updated. Longer staleness = more uncertainty.

How to use the score

The Weekend Risk Score helps you make informed decisions:

  • Before weekends — Consider reducing leverage on high-risk positions
  • Choosing markets — Prefer ETF collateral over single stocks for lower risk
  • Setting buffers — Maintain more margin on high-risk markets
  • Comparing options — Use the score to compare similar yield opportunities
